Fargo Flood Buyouts

March 9, 2010

Fargo-Moorhead is about 3 hours north of and a basin away from  Southwest Minnesota, but I find many good lessons for mitigation in the Red River Valley flood fights over the last dozen years.  From In-Forum today:

More Fargo homeowners pursue buyouts

City waiting to hear if clay levees can stay until permanent protection built.

The prospect of another major flood in Fargo this spring has spurred more people to contact city officials about selling their homes, the City Commission was told Monday.

Two homes are now under contract and another eight homeowners are in “serious negotiations” to sell the properties, Assistant City Attorney Butch McConn said.

The cost of the properties could be $4 million altogether, McConn said.

“I do anticipate several other homeowners will go under contract,” he said.

The commissioner voted 3-0 to authorize staff to pursue the buyouts.

Fargo has purchased at least 24 homes worth $7.1 million as of late February, city records show.
